Something for the Weekend

Far as I know this is the only clip from Bobbie Gentry’s 1960s BBCTV show on YouTube which is a real shame as it’s wonderful. I hope there’s more sitting in the Beeb vaults waiting to be reissued (please!) but I wouldn’t be surprised if they’ve been wiped knowing their past history with other old shows.

It’s all great but don’t miss her duet with Donovan at the 11:00 mark.

  1. Donovan’s version of Long A’Growing just before the duet is interesting. Steeleye Span did a version on Now We Are Six, but upped the ages of the young man that the lady marries.
I wish I’d seen this earlier. I was trying to remember that opening song for a pub quiz – pity she didn’t do a full version.

  2. Whoever is responsible for Lana Del Rey’s styling (herself or some team, doesn’t matter) they’re very aware of Gentry aren’t they? It’s been bugging me for some time who they were influenced by. See also Kacey Musgraves.

  3. And as for Donovan, I sometimes think I love his mid to late 60s stuff as much as I love anybody from the 60s who weren’t on Motown. Some of those singles are amongst my top 60s songs. Prefer him at that point to Dylan and The Stones and The Beatles to be honest.

  4. Here’s what I hope is a little twitch in the road. Way back in the day, when you heard the lyrics

When I look over my shoulder
What do you think I see
    Some other cat looking over
    His shoulder at me

And he’s strange, sure he’s strange
You’ve got to pick up every stitch

It was a signal to be aware all the time that you were dealing with those in the know about counterculture. This is a very legit interpretation.

    OR

It’s an evocation of how you can never know what side anyone is on.

The morality of that interpretation is out there with me. Did I note the radioactive skeletons of grandchildren?
